The Bombay Shirt Company finds a home in the city of New York

The Bombay Shirt Company, as the name suggests takes pride in its city of origin, Mumbai. Known for their custom-tailored shirts, BSC’s offerings are for the corporate crowd, yet anything but generic.

BSC originally started out as an online store in 2012, extending to stores in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkatta, New Delhi and Dubai, and now, the label has found a new home. Carrying forward their minimalist urban aesthetic, the Bombay Shirt Company has a new space in SoHo, New York City. Vogue spoke to founder and creative director Akshay Narvekar about the big move.

What made you think of taking the Bombay Shirt Company to New York?
When we launched Bombay Shirt Company, our mission was always to create a global brand. Nothing signals global more than New York City. We have an exciting price/value proposition for the market in the United States. Once we found the correct partners, we were ready to go full steam ahead with the launch.

How is the store in New York different from the ones in India?
All our stores, be it in India or abroad, are bound together by certain themes—colour palette, the materials used in construction, typography and product selection. However, each store is fit out to suit the neighbourhood that it resides in. Our Kala Ghoda store has a mid-century feel to it given the history of the surrounding area. The New York store has a few more modern touches given that it’s in vibrant Soho. So, every store is distinct but yet identifiable as a BSC store.

What is one thing in your product offering that is unique to your customers in New York?
Our products are fairly similar across stores and geographies. However, with New York, we have to cater slightly more to seasonal and weather-related needs. More flannels and warmer brushed fabrics work well especially this time of the year.

Are there any further plans of expansion?
We hope to double our store count over the next 12 months.
